You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup
Caregiving is one of the most meaningful acts of love a person can offer. It can also be one of the most demanding.
Many caregivers spend so much time caring for others that they neglect their own physical, emotional, and mental well-being. They push through exhaustion. They ignore stress. They tell themselves they’ll take care of themselves later.
But caregiving is not a sprint. For many families, it is a long and challenging journey. At the Edel Caregiver Institute, we believe caring for yourself is not selfish—it is essential.
What Is Caregiver Burnout?
Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that can occur when the demands of caregiving become overwhelming. Burnout doesn’t happen because you don’t care enough. In fact, it often happens because you care so deeply.
Many caregivers feel pressure to do everything themselves while balancing work, family responsibilities, financial concerns, and the emotional challenges of watching a loved one struggle with illness.
Over time, that stress can take a toll.
