Caregiver Burnout & Self-Care

Signs of Caregiver Burnout

You may be experiencing burnout if you find yourself:

  • Feeling exhausted most of the time
  • Becoming easily frustrated or irritable
  • Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed
  • Having difficulty sleeping
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Neglecting your own health appointments
  • Feeling hopeless or emotionally numb
  • Resenting caregiving responsibilities
  • Feeling guilty no matter what you do

Many caregivers experience some of these feelings from time to time. The important thing is recognizing when you need support.

The Hidden Emotion: Guilt

One of the most common emotions caregivers experience is guilt.

You may feel guilty because:

  • You’re tired.
  • You need a break.
  • You’re frustrated.
  • You wish things were different.
  • You can’t do everything.
  • You’re considering additional help.

These feelings are common. They are also human. The reality is that no caregiver can do everything alone. Asking for help is not a failure. It is often one of the healthiest decisions you can make for yourself and your loved one.

Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others

Self-care doesn’t have to mean a vacation or a spa day.

Sometimes self-care means:

  • Asking a friend for help
  • Accepting support when it’s offered
  • Taking a short walk
  • Attending a support group
  • Keeping a medical appointment
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Taking time to connect with others
  • Giving yourself permission to rest

Small steps can make a meaningful difference.

Why Self-Care Matters

When caregivers are overwhelmed, everyone feels the impact. When caregivers are supported, they are better able to:

  • Make informed decisions
  • Manage stress
  • Maintain their own health
  • Care for loved ones effectively
  • Enjoy meaningful moments together

Taking care of yourself is not separate from caregiving. It is part of caregiving.
