Most hospice care is provided wherever a patient calls home. However, there are times when symptoms become difficult to manage and additional medical support is needed. When that happens, Hospice Savannah’s Hospice Inpatient Unit (HIPU) provides around-the-clock care in a peaceful, home-like setting designed specifically for hospice patients and their families.

Located on Eisenhower Drive in Savannah, our Hospice Inpatient Unit is the only facility of its kind serving our five-county region.

The Hospice Inpatient Unit was thoughtfully designed to feel warm, welcoming, and comfortable. Surrounded by trees, gardens, and peaceful outdoor spaces, the facility offers a calm environment where patients can receive expert care while families focus on spending meaningful time together.

Private rooms are spacious and comfortable, and loved ones are welcome to visit at any time. Overnight accommodations, Wi-Fi, comfortable gathering spaces, and family support areas help make each stay as comfortable as possible.

When Is Inpatient Hospice Care Needed?

Patients may benefit from care in the Hospice Inpatient Unit when symptoms become difficult to manage at home and require more intensive nursing care and medical oversight.

Common reasons for admission include:

Uncontrolled pain
Shortness of breath
Nausea or vomiting
Anxiety or agitation
Complex symptom management needs

The goal is to stabilize symptoms and improve comfort while helping patients avoid unnecessary hospital admissions whenever possible.

Support for Caregivers

Every day, family caregivers perform extraordinary acts of love. They manage medications, coordinate appointments, provide transportation, prepare meals, advocate for loved ones, and offer emotional support through some of life’s most difficult moments. Yet caregivers often put their own needs last.

The Edel Caregiver Institute was created to change that. As part of Georgia Care Innovators, the Edel Caregiver Institute provides education, resources, support, and encouragement for family caregivers throughout coastal Georgia.
