Most hospice care is provided wherever a patient calls home. However, there are times when symptoms become difficult to manage and additional medical support is needed. When that happens, Hospice Savannah’s Hospice Inpatient Unit (HIPU) provides around-the-clock care in a peaceful, home-like setting designed specifically for hospice patients and their families.

Located on Eisenhower Drive in Savannah, our Hospice Inpatient Unit is the only facility of its kind serving our five-county region.

The Hospice Inpatient Unit was thoughtfully designed to feel warm, welcoming, and comfortable. Surrounded by trees, gardens, and peaceful outdoor spaces, the facility offers a calm environment where patients can receive expert care while families focus on spending meaningful time together.

Private rooms are spacious and comfortable, and loved ones are welcome to visit at any time. Overnight accommodations, Wi-Fi, comfortable gathering spaces, and family support areas help make each stay as comfortable as possible.

When Is Inpatient Hospice Care Needed?

Patients may benefit from care in the Hospice Inpatient Unit when symptoms become difficult to manage at home and require more intensive nursing care and medical oversight.

Common reasons for admission include:

Uncontrolled pain
Shortness of breath
Nausea or vomiting
Anxiety or agitation
Complex symptom management needs

The goal is to stabilize symptoms and improve comfort while helping patients avoid unnecessary hospital admissions whenever possible.

Support for Caregivers

Caring for a loved one can be physically and emotionally demanding. Through Medicare’s respite care benefit, eligible caregivers may receive a temporary break while their loved one receives care in the Hospice Inpatient Unit for up to five consecutive days.

Respite stays provide caregivers with an opportunity to rest, recharge, and attend to their own well-being while knowing their loved one is receiving compassionate, expert care.

The Hospice Inpatient Unit was designed not only for patients, but also for those who love them. Families are encouraged to remain involved throughout the patient’s stay and have access to welcoming gathering spaces, quiet areas for reflection, and comfortable accommodations for spending time together.
